Ram Gopal Varma is regarded as one of the best filmmakers that we have today. And this won't change despite the fact that he has given some disastrous movies in the past two years. The last year saw his ambitious project Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag bombing miserably. This has left a tamed RGV looking desperately at Sarkar Raj to provide him with success and breathing space. Especially so because the prequel Sarkar was his last hit and also the last time he got his regular acclaim as a filmmaker.
No wonder then Sarkar Raj has created so much of interest. Let's give out the verdict straight Sarkar Raj is good. but not as good as Sarkar. The sequel is not as gripping. But making a sequel has always been a dicey game. Isn't it?

The story of Sarkar Raj delves right into the heart of politics and how things actually happen. The story of the film is a classic chess game where pawns are moved until it become necessary for the leaders to come ahead.
Anita (Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan) is a business woman who flies in from London with a plan to set up a power plant in Maharashtra. Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan) refuses support as that would mean displacing 40,000 people. But his son Shankar

(Abhishek Bachchan) convinces him to go ahead. In a turn of incidents the political grail gets warmed and the sparks reach the Nagre family itself. Somji (Rajesh Shringapure), the grandson of Subhash's guru Rao. Sahab emerges as a strong opposition to the Nagre family.
Sarkar Raj is an out an out suspense thriller. You keep guessing who would be the real culprit till almost the end. The only problem with the film is that it does get extremely slow at certain points making the audience fidget on their seats. The dialogues are good and the story plays out well. Also the relationship and emotions are portrayed in a strong way. Especially the relationship between the father-son duo, Subhash and Shankar.

Technically, Sarkar Raj stands rated as great. Cinematography is top notch and is helped by some outstanding lighting. RGV has always understood lighting really well. Amar Mohile is at his best with the background music. You almost carry the theme music home as you move out of the theatre. Govinda Govinda!
Performance-wise Aishwarya looks and does well. Hats off to Amitabh Bachchan for another power packed effort.
Amitabh really shows he is still capable of holding the superstar tag. Abhishek Bachchan is outstanding. He shows that he can hold his ground in front of his father as well. The rest of the cast has carried out its job well.
Overall, Sarkar Raj would definitely bring back the respect to Ram Gopal Varma. All said and done, this man needs to be credited for the courage he shows in creating certain situations, which ideally would scare a director while thinking of box office success. Sarkar Raj is fine cinema.

Like Sarkar, this sequel too shows that RGV is inspired by the Godfather series. Wonder if he decides to make a third film to complete this series like the Godfather. Sarkar does have someone to carry his legacy at the end of the movie. Keep guessing
